North Buffalo Cemetery
Our
Story
North Buffalo Cemetery was established on October 11, 1894, when Norwegian immigrant Peder M. Tufton and wife Olgard (Grove) Tufton donated 1.04 acres in the SW¼ of the SE¼ of Section 15, Kragnes Township, Clay County, MN. This land was donated to the “North Buffalo River Cemetery Association” and its trustees were Olaus Erickson, H. Jacob Wentzell, and Ole E. Tangen.
After the North Buffalo River Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation was organized on January 6, 1896 in a schoolhouse across the road from the cemetery, a church building was built in the middle of the cemetery in 1897 and the cemetery land was given to the church by the cemetery association in May, 1897. It appears the cemetery association disbanded after the land was deeded to the church.
By about 1920, the word “River” was dropped from the church and cemetery names, leaving them with the new names, “North Buffalo Church” and “North Buffalo Cemetery.”

North Buffalo Church owned, operated, and maintained the North Buffalo Cemetery until January 25, 2015, when the cemetery association was reorganized as “North Buffalo Cemetery Association, Inc.” The first board of directors consisted of Paul Fossum, President & Treasurer; L. Charles Brendemuhl, Vice President; Gary Sauter, Secretary; James Powers, Director, Stanley DeJong, Director.
The cemetery association has established a perpetual care fund, the interest income of which will eventually provide for the perpetual care of the North Buffalo Cemetery.

The 2023-24 North Buffalo Cemetery Association Board of Directors consists of: Paul Fossum, President & Treasurer; L. Charles Brendemuhl, Vice President; Gary Sauter, Secretary; James Powers, Director; Larry Tufton, Director; and Alex Swanson, Director.
